MARIE CLAIRE HONOURED AT RE:FASHION AWARDS

November 20, 2008

Marie Claire June Marie Claire magazine has won the award for Consumer Awareness of ethical fashion at the RE:Fashion Awards at Shoreditch Townhall.

The world's first dedicated ethical fashion awards were held to celebrate the hard work of young designers, big brands and behind-the-scenes manufacturers who have tackled poverty, environmental projects and changed consumer attitudes towards ethics and sustainability in the fashion industry.

The RE:Fashion Award judges included some of the most important names in the fashion industry including Jane Shepherdson, CEO of Whistles; Katharine Hamnett, Fashion Designer; Hilary Alexander, Fashion Director, Daily Telegraph and Anna Orsini of the British Fashion Council.  Profile models at the show included Daisy Lowe, Leah Weller, Pixie Geldof and Clara Paget, who modelled one-off garments from designers including Vivienne Westwood, Todd Lynn, Zandra Rhodes, Preen, Allegra Hicks, Jonathan Saunders and Aimee McWilliams.

Marie Claire beat off stiff competition to win the Consumer Awareness award from fair trade fashion brand People Tree and War on Want.  With its Fashion with Heart strap-line, Marie Claire highlights labels and designers that successfully combine fashion credibility with ethical and/or sustainable values. The magazine is also renowned for a 20-year history of female-friendly investigative journalism.

Marie O'Riordan, editor Marie Claire, says of the win: “I am absolutely thrilled that Marie Claire has won this award.  Our Fashion with Heart philosophy stems from the belief that women want to be able to combine ethics with aesthetics. We are proud that we promote a philosophy that demonstrates it is fashionable to embrace ethical values while retaining a stylish edge – we want to feel good about our consumer choices.”
